9.1 Unidirectional displacement measurement

9.1.1 Principle

A sequence of alternately opaque and transparent strips forms an amplitude grating. One-dimensional moiré measurements are performed by superimposing two amplitude gratings of identical pitch, one on the ruler and the other on moving verniers. When the gratings are in phase, 50% of the light passes through; when the gratings are in phase opposition, all the light is stopped (figure
