1. Context

For many years now, the production and detection of terahertz (THz) radiation has been a hot topic in both academic research and industry. Imaging, non-destructive testing (NDT) and the detection of explosives are the particular applications of THz waves that have made the most headlines. In addition to techniques for producing and detecting coherent THz radiation, methods for extracting spectra (static or dynamic) are an important part of our know-how in this particular frequency domain.

Coherent THz radiation refers either to monochromatic radiation of high spectral purity, or to a THz pulse whose various spectral components have a well-defined phase relationship that conditions the temporal shape of the pulse. This is the name generally used, as opposed to the incoherent radiation from a source such as a blackbody.
