The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), currently known as the "Treaty of Lisbon", signed in 2007, is one of the two fundamental treaties of the European Union's political institutions, along with the Treaty on European Union.

The European Commission has created a number of tools for funding research projects, adapted to the different types of research and organizations that can be funded (industrial, research laboratories, academic, etc.). Generally speaking, the EC is keen to see greater development of joint projects, and therefore more coordination and collaboration. This is why the ERA-Net tools have been implemented.
