3. Setting tolerances

Determining technical specifications and tolerances is not, in principle, the responsibility of the metrologist. Nevertheless, the metrologist's intervention can be beneficial in ensuring greater consistency within the company.

He knows the technical possibilities of measurement instrumentation, and can therefore inform the design office and designers of control possibilities.

He can take part in the development of test plans by indicating the characteristics that can be measured without major difficulties.

The designer, knowing the capacity of the means of production and the functional characteristics of the product, will define the characteristics and tolerances to be respected by the manufactured products.
