2. Mixed synthesis versus parallel synthesis
Historically, the first experiments in combinatorial chemistry were carried out in mixtures for the rapid synthesis of millions of compounds. This technique, well suited to the synthesis of peptides and oligonucleotides, generally involves several resyntheses of the chemical library to identify an active molecule within the mixture. Parallel synthesis of single compounds avoids this tedious step and enables more complex chemical reactions to be used.
