All matrix detectors have imperfections which, even if very small, can be visible on the screen. These may be non-functional pixels, rows or columns that are not active...
In flat-panel digital detectors, the main cause of these defects lies in the quality of the glass slabs that support the amorphous silicon photodiodes and transistors (or the quality of the wafers in CMOS technology). These slabs are manufactured in clean rooms using micro-lithography technologies, where the slightest dust can generate an open or short circuit. Given the cleanliness requirements in these rooms, such defects are rare, but on a 10 million pixel matrix with a surface area of 40 × 40 cm, they are unavoidable, unless you accept ridiculously low manufacturing yields and prohibitively high production costs. Fortunately, their existence has no impact on the quality of diagnostics performed...
