3.1.1 Generalities and structures
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are monomeric or multimeric enzymes existing in several forms. In mammals, CAs are present in
monomeric form, while in plants and algae they are also found in multimeric
form. At least 15 different types of anhydrase are found in humans.
They are classified according to their location. Carbonic anhydrases
4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 are secreted or associated with the membrane.
