The general rules governing ventilation, sanitation and air renewal in workplaces are set out in the French Labor Code, Section II "Ambiance des lieux de travail" (articles R 235-2-4 to R 235-2-8 and R 232-5 to R 232-5-14). The two basic objectives of ventilation, as set out in article R 232-5, are to maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to the health of workers, and to avoid discomfort for these same workers (temperature rises, unpleasant odours, condensation).
These general rules specify minimum air renewal values, maximum exposure values (particularly to dust) and obligations concerning the evacuation of pollutants, the use of recycling and the maintenance of installations. They apply to enclosed premises where personnel are required...
