5. Applications to Structural Pathology

The findings from the previous chapters have direct applications in structural pathology, both for predicting deterioration and for determining the appropriate injection repair techniques. This chapter discusses four practical applications.

5.1 Carbonation Depth

Carbonation proceeds by the diffusion of carbon dioxide into the pore water, followed by the reaction CO2 + Ca(OH)2 → CaCO3 + H2O. The depth of carbonation at a given time t follows, as a first approximation, Fick’s law with a tortuosity factor τ that depends on the accessible porosity:
