Numerous efforts are being made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and consequently energy consumption, particularly in new and renovated buildings. Today, we know how to construct buildings that are highly energy-efficient, and even produce more energy than they consume: positive energy buildings (BEPOS).

We now also need to look at the consumption required to manufacture, maintain, service, adapt and deconstruct buildings, which is becoming proportionally more important. The energy balance of buildings needs to be considered as a whole, and over their entire lifespan.
