3. Steel-concrete adhesion
The transmission of forces from concrete to reinforcement, or vice versa, is made possible by the phenomenon known as "bonding" between these materials. Adhesion is actually the result of friction between steel and concrete.
Bond strength is the means of transferring forces between concrete and steel. It depends on :
on the one hand, the mechanical action caused by the tightening of the concrete encasing the steel;
secondly, the bonding of the steel by the cement in the concrete or by the lime released during the setting of the cements and the iron oxide covering the reinforcement: a protective salt oxide is formed, a ferrite passivating film.
