Principles of reinforced concrete

Bond strength is the means of transferring forces between concrete and steel. It depends on :

• on the one hand, the mechanical action caused by the tightening of the concrete encasing the steel;

• secondly, the bonding of the steel by the cement in the concrete or by the lime released during the setting of the cements and the iron oxide covering the reinforcement: a protective salt oxide is formed, a ferrite passivating film.
