1. Introduction to steel corrosion
According to ISO 8044:2020, corrosion is a physico-chemical interaction
between a metallic material and its surrounding environment, resulting
in changes in the properties of the metal and potentially leading
to significant degradation of the function of the metal, the surrounding
environment or the technical system of which they are part.
Metal corrosion is a natural phenomenon that occurs spontaneously
as soon as the material comes into contact with an aggressive environment.
This can be as simple as a moisture-laden atmosphere. In its presence,
the surface of the steel tends to be destroyed and covered with rust.
