Durability and long-term reliability
Straw Bale Construction - Technical Interfaces and Associated Building Components

The initial performance of a straw-bale building is not in itself a guarantee of durability. As with any building system, its durability depends on the structure’s ability to maintain its performance despite adverse weather conditions, construction deviations, subsequent modifications, and the natural aging of its components.

In the case of a straw-insulated wall, this durability depends less on the material itself than on the integrity of the interfaces. Experience shows that the problems observed rarely stem from the straw itself, but rather from an accumulation of localized vulnerabilities: poor water repellency, membrane discontinuities, poorly ventilated interfaces, and incompatible interactions between materials.

Long-term reliability must therefore be viewed as a systemic property of the project.
