The exterior skin refers to the visible part of the dwelling, when viewed from outside the building. This envelope acts as an interface with the outside world, but also, and above all, as a protective layer, sometimes with several layers that can be stacked on top of each other, thus enhancing comfort and well-being: protection against the elements, impacts and the wear and tear of time. Under no circumstances does it have a structural function, nor does it contribute to bracing the structure of a timber-frame house.
