CE marking, which declares conformity with the essential requirements of directives, is carried out under the sole responsibility of the manufacturer or importer; it is a condition for placing equipment on the European market, but provides no guarantee of the equipment's quality.

Marks of conformity to standards are issued after various procedures (tests, periodic sampling, quality assurance system, etc.) under the supervision of an approved third-party organization.
They may be national equivalents (NF, VDE, IMQ, KEMA, etc.), or European equivalents (ENEC for luminaires and accessories).
