Execution of steel structures : EN 1090-2. Revision and additions

ABSTRACT

The execution of steel structures is now the subject of a dedicated standard, the NF EN 1090-2, which has been reviewed in 2018. Although the basics of the standard are not changed, this version provides important clarifications as to its implementing methods. It also provides new tools for the designer and the steel manufacturer to enable them to adapt their approach as well as possible and to demonstrate the compliance to the requirements of the contract documents.

This article makes a reading of the new elements of this version and goes into more detail on some topics, in particular those related to the inspection of assemblies made either by welding or using mechanical fasteners; finally, it questions the notion of inspection and test plan to help and ensure its efficiency.

INTRODUCTION

EN 1090-2 defines the expected performance of a structure, from the supply of materials (steels, mechanical fasteners, welding consumables, etc.) to on-site assembly.

Since the publication of C 2 543 in the IT bases, the standard has been revised in 2018, in particular to take into account comments made at European level following numerous feedbacks. Certain requirements have therefore evolved, but without calling into question the general principles. The aim of this article is not to provide a detailed comparative assessment of the two versions, but to highlight the main changes in the text.

The aim of the first part is to provide an overview of these developments in relation to two cross-cutting themes: procurement and execution classes. The article then returns to thermal cutting operations, briefly discussed in the previous article, and to certain developments in the welding chapter. It then looks at the requirements for mechanical fastener assemblies (drilling, installation, inspection).

Finally, he concludes by returning to the "inspection and test plan", an essential element of the documentation to be drawn up by the carpenter, with objectives of project management and communication between those involved.
