3. Hot riveting
Riveting is the oldest fastening method used in steel construction. The Garabit viaduct and the Eiffel Tower are famous examples.
Rivets are rather complex to use, as they have to be installed under heat, and are less frequently used today, in favor of bolts. However, some companies continue to use them in their workshops, as they are less expensive than bolts.
There are two main types of rivet:
round-head rivets (symbol R) ;
countersunk rivets (symbol F or F/90).
In the past, a third type of rivet was used: the convex countersunk head rivet (symbol FB or FB/90).
