10. Cross-functional standards
Although straw bale construction has its own specific professional standards, it is not a standalone system from a regulatory standpoint. It is fully integrated into the broader body of building codes and standards, including those covering structural integrity, thermal performance, moisture control, airtightness, fire safety, and acoustics.
Professional standards for straw bale construction provide guidelines for the material and its application. However, they do not replace the technical standards (DTUs) applicable to related structures, nor the Eurocodes governing structural design.
Interface engineering therefore requires a cross-functional approach to standards.
