9.1 Structures in contact with seawater
This includes piers, ferry terminals, oil platforms and lighthouses.
In all these cases, you can use :
or epoxies, which offer very long resistance to seawater (several decades) and protect steels from saltwater corrosion, but produce rigid joints;
or polysulfides, flexible epoxy-polysulfides or epoxy-polyurethanes.
The joints in the large-scale concrete slab at the Hoverport in Dover (UK) –, which houses the air-cushioned Hovercraft, were made using an epoxy-polyurethane mastic, which is moderately flexible but resists the harsh working conditions (friction, wear, sea water).
