2.1 ISO layers and CAN bus
The standard ISO 11519 of the CAN bus specifies :
in part A, an 11-bit identification field ("standard" format);
in part B, a 29-bit identification field ("extended" format).
Note: in this article, only the standard format will be presented; the difference with the extended format will only concern the size of the identifier.
This standard defines the physical layer, or layer 1 in the ISO sense of the term, which is responsible for defining the signal on the media, the electrical interface and bit coding, and layer 2, the link layer.
