2. Basic principles of a control loop
In what follows, we will concentrate on describing single-variable control loops.

The aim of a continuous process control loop is to maintain the measurement at a desired value – or within a range of values –, despite disturbances, by acting on the action (the physical system input). This can be done manually, in an open loop.
Example
In car driving, the driver maintains the desired speed and trajectory by manipulating the gas pedal and steering wheel. This is manual control....
