A metamaterial is an artificial structure possessing electromagnetic properties that go beyond (from the Greek prefix μ∊τα) those of conventional materials. Unlike these conventional materials, whose intrinsic properties stem from their microscopic structures, the unusual properties of metamaterials arise from their macroscopic structures.
