2. Ferrite synthesis
Ferrites are synthetic mixed oxides developed at high temperatures from the primary oxides of transition metals. For example, nickel ferrite NiFe2O4 is synthesized from iron and nickel oxides, NiO and Fe2O3 respectively. Their synthesis leads either to polycrystalline materials, which today represent the best-selling magnetic ceramics, or to single crystals of lesser industrial importance.
Single-crystal ferrites are synthesized by a variety of methods: hydrothermal synthesis, growth in molten oxide media and pulling synthesis. The latter is used for industrial single crystals.
