Piezoelectric materials, which are classified as dielectrics, have around a hundred applications. Most people don't realize that an essential function of a device, instrument or appliance is performed by a piezoelectric crystal, ceramic or thin film: the piezoelectric material is rarely explicitly mentioned in the application (except in the case of quartz watches, for example).
