Piezoelectric materials, which are classified as dielectrics, have around a hundred applications. Most people don't realize that an essential function of a device, instrument or appliance is performed by a piezoelectric crystal, ceramic or thin film: the piezoelectric material is rarely explicitly mentioned in the application (except in the case of quartz watches, for example). The great success of piezoelectric materials is due to the fact that piezoelectricity linearly couples two very useful worlds in our activities: that of mechanics and that of electricity.
