Transformers and inductors belong to the family of passive components and are used in all areas of electronics.

for which these components play a fundamental role in converter operation, galvanic isolation and filtering.
The technological evolution of transformers and inductors is currently linked to a need for miniaturization (particularly observed in telecommunications, airborne and consumer applications) and surface-mounting of components on printed circuits or insulated metal substrates.
Great strides have been made in increasing frequency, and the combination of multi-layer winding technologies and the development of new materials have made it possible to keep pace with this irreversible evolution. But in some cases, thermal and insulation constraints are a brake on miniaturization.
Today, the cost of magnetic components in converters is becoming significant, and a technical and economic dialogue needs to be established between electronics designers and component manufacturers.
