1. Broadband Access Network

The deployment of fiber-optic networks has enabled operators to offer ultra-high-speed broadband services, exceeding the speeds achievable with twisted-pair copper. In fact, fiber-optic technology overcomes the limitations imposed by signal attenuation and electromagnetic interference on xDSL lines. Wireless transmission, in particular, is constrained by the limitations of radio wave propagation: signal attenuation, obstacles, and atmospheric conditions. The advantages of fiber optics are as follows:

  • the virtually unlimited bandwidth of fiber optics enables greater data transmission capacity all the way to the end customer;

  • fiber-optic distribution reduces network management and maintenance costs.
