2. SOA applications in telecommunications
In this second section, we describe some SOA applications in the field of optical telecommunications. While their gain non-linearities have made them largely preferable to EDFAs for the amplification function in high-speed, long-distance transmissions, their use as amplifiers in access networks is still the subject of research. But it is precisely because of their gain non-linearities that SOAs have been extensively studied, in order to realize potentially useful optical functions such as electro-optical modulation, wavelength conversion, all-optical regeneration, time demultiplexing, clock recovery and phase conjugation. Let's take a look at some of these applications.
