An electronic assembly is simply defined as consisting of three main elements: an electronic component, a printed circuit board (PCB), and solder joints.

A complete electronic board (or PCBA, Printed Circuit Board Assembly) can therefore be defined as a set of different electronic assemblies (figure 1 ). There are two types of components assembled on boards: through-hole components and surface-mount components (SMDs). This article focuses on SMDs, as they are particularly critical in terms of thermomechanical stresses.
