The most general model of the DC network associated with a current switch is an active dipole consisting of a voltage source E (DC voltage source or periodic voltage source of non-zero mean value) in series with a resistor R and an inductance L . The current

in the dipole is unidirectional, which is, in fact, imposed by the unidirectional nature of switches. The voltage E can be positive or negative, and the dipole can behave as a receiver or generator, corresponding to rectifier or inverter operation of the switch.
The sinusoidal AC voltage source, single-phase or three-phase, is assumed to be perfect and of constant amplitude.
