These properties have given water a vital role on Earth. A liquid under ambient conditions but capable of existing in all three states, it regulates climates as well as the body temperatures of living beings; it helps erode rocks to create agricultural soil; and it shapes the functioning of life and human activities. It is the most universal solvent, though with certain limitations (for example, noble metals).
