3. Characteristics of the ISO 14001:2026 Standard

The standard is prescriptive: it is not a guide; rather, it sets forth requirements that must be met to achieve compliance. However, it limits itself to stating what must be done, not how to do it; for example, it requires the identification of significant environmental aspects but leaves it to the organization to define and present a method for this identification.

The standard is evolutionary (requiring continuous improvement): it is based on the PDCA cycle and the principle of continuous improvement of the management system.

The standard defines the management system, not environmental performance: it does not set specific numerical values that must be met—which fall under the purview of regulations—but only specifies the actions that must be implemented to achieve the environmental objectives the organization has set.
