Overview
ABSTRACT
This article details the internal and external stakes which must lead an organization ("organism" in ISO terms), whatever its nature into designing an Environmental Management System consistent with the standard ISO 14001:2026, then provides a brief description of this standard with detailed comments on its requirements, pointing out the changes with ISO 14001:2015. These changes are not very important except for the structure which is then identical for all management systems whatever may be the covered field; also the new version includes explicitely climate change and biodiversity protection.

INTRODUCTION
Taking into account all the environmental impacts of an organization’s activities (referred to as an “organism” in ISO terminology) throughout a product’s life cycle has become a necessity, regardless of the organization’s nature. These impacts must now include new effects, particularly those related to climate change and the preservation of biodiversity. Addressing these impacts requires appropriate management, and thus their integration into the company’s overall management framework. However, an effective approach to this management relies on a systems-based approach, hence the value of designing an environmental management system (EMS).
The standard ISO 14001 “Environmental Management System. Requirements and Guidelines for Use,” in its 2026 revised edition, retains the fundamental elements of the previous version (published in 2015), supplementing them in certain areas, but above all giving it a structure and format identical to those of other management system standards, thereby facilitating the implementation of an integrated management system (see
The purpose of this article is to describe the content of the ISO 14001 standard, 2026 version, after reviewing the environmental challenges facing organizations and the specific characteristics of the environmental dimension. It includes a description of the changes to the standard compared to the previous version.
It should be noted that compliance with the ISO 14001 standard enables an organization to obtain third-party certification.
The ISO 14001:2026 standard (like the 2015 version) applies to all types of organizations; however, this article is specifically intended to assist businesses.
