Front (and/or rear) lateral transmissions are important elements in the acoustic and vibratory tuning of an automobile. They can transmit and even amplify vibrations generated by the engine. Under certain conditions, they can also be a source of noise or vibration themselves.

This last aspect is the subject of this article. It details three main acoustic and/or vibratory phenomena that can create nuisances for the vehicle user and to which the designer, but also the tuner, pay particular attention: hammering, H ₂ /R ₆ flutter and cooing.
