3. Equivalent level, sound exposure, and peak level
The risk associated with occupational noise depends on its level,
duration, and frequency distribution. These parameters must therefore
be taken into account to characterize the noise. This is achieved
by averaging the measured signal over a given time period and weighting
it in the frequency domain to bring it in line with the ear’s sensitivity.
Regulations rely on two indicators to assess the risk of hearing loss:
the daily noise exposure level and the C-weighted peak level.
In addition, information must be provided regarding noisy machinery:
the instruction manual must specify the A-weighted sound pressure
level measured at workstations and, when this level is excessive,
the A-weighted sound power level emitted by the machine.
