5. Instruments for Measuring Noise in the Workplace

Noise measurements are difficult to perform, and numerous precautions must be taken, such as:

  • the selection and quality of the sound level meter, microphones, digitization, and recording systems;

  • calibration before and after the measurement;

  • accounting for the influence of wind or drafts during outdoor measurements, as well as electric or magnetic fields, if applicable;

  • fluctuations in the noise being measured, which determine the temporal and spatial sampling of measurement points and the duration of measurements;

  • measurement uncertainties.

Accurate noise measurement is not possible without prior training of the operator.
