3.1 Introduction

Hydrogen peroxide is an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide with the formula H 2 O 2 . It is a high-volume industrial product. Worldwide production of hydrogen peroxide currently stands at three million tonnes. It is growing by 4% a year. Applications include pulp bleaching, water treatment, disinfection and sterilization. Its applications in the chemical industry are numerous, and its transformation into by-products such as sodium percarbonate is also under development. Compared with chlorine-based disinfectants such as bleach, hydrogen peroxide offers the environmental advantage of not producing undesirable chlorine derivatives.
