Fire statistics – Collection, processing and harmonization

An analysis of French data reveals a significant trend in fire-related mortality over the past four decades. Between 1982 and 2022, the annual number of fire-related deaths decreased by 53.1%, falling from approximately 700 victims per year to approximately 370. Relative to the population, this indicator reflects a 2.3-fold decrease in the mortality rate per 100,000 inhabitants. This positive trend can be attributed to a combination of factors: improved building codes and materials, the widespread adoption of automatic detection systems, and the increased focus on prevention policies targeting household fire risks.
