2. Current regulations
Pursuant to article L. 2224-10 of the French General Code of Territorial Authorities (CGCT), communes delimit, after a public inquiry, the areas of their territory that are subject to collective sanitation and those that are subject to non-collective sanitation. There is therefore an alternative: non-collective sanitation must be designed and implemented on a permanent basis.
The scope of non-collective sanitation is limited to 1.2 kg of BOD

, i.e. 20 population equivalents (article R. 2224-17 of the CGCT). Above this threshold, facilities fall within the scope of the technical specifications set out in the Order of June 22, 2007.
