3. Hydrogen as a Fuel for Transportation

While it is now clear that the oxidizer for fuel cells installed in electric vehicles will be air (compressed or uncompressed), the nature of the fuel—which was much less certain 15 years ago—is now clearly identified: it is hydrogen, and preferably green hydrogen. Indeed, even though there is little doubt about the gas that reacts with the anode catalysts (hydrogen), the form in which hydrogen will be carried and stored on board a vehicle will depend on its intended use and the hydrogen distribution network. Several solutions currently exist for storing hydrogen in its molecular form, regardless of its physical state. However, producing hydrogen on demand within the vehicle through the chemical conversion of an alcohol, a hydrocarbon, or a hydride is no longer feasible given the tightening of regulations governing vehicle emissions and CO2 as well as growing awareness of transportation’s...
