The method is part of an activity cycle. Upstream of the FMEA, a functional analysis must have been carried out. The external functional analysis of the system describes what is expected of it. This description is essential to give meaning to the malfunction analysis. The aim is to determine whether the malfunctions identified comply with these requirements, prevent the achievement of a required function, degrade the accomplishment of a function, or produce a result that is indifferent to the specifications, but which we must ensure does not present a danger.
