2. Current regulations
Pursuant to article L. 2224-10 of the French General Code of Territorial Authorities (CGCT), communes delimit, after a public inquiry, the areas of their territory that are subject to collective sanitation and those that are subject to non-collective sanitation. There is therefore an alternative: non-collective sanitation must be designed and implemented on a permanent basis.
The scope of non-collective sanitation is limited to 1.2 kg of BOD5 , i.e. 20 population equivalents (article R. 2224-17 of the CGCT). Above this threshold, facilities fall within the scope of the technical specifications set out in the Order of June 22, 2007.
Notaa "population equivalent (p.e.)" is the biodegradable organic load with a five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) of 60 grams of oxygen per day (article R. 2224-6 of the CGCT).
