Maples belong to the Sapindaceae family, according to the phylogenetic classification that has absorbed the classic Aceraceae classification, and to the Acer genus. They include some 150 species, the best-known of which is the sugar maple. Sugar maples have been around for 100 million years, and are found in the northeastern United States and Canada, mainly in the province of Quebec (figure 3 ).
