volatile fatty acids

Short-chain organic acids (acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate) produced during anaerobic fermentation and acidogenesis. Key intermediates in anaerobic digestion.

biogenic

Describes a compound or stream produced by a recent biological process, as opposed to one of fossil origin. Biogenic CO ₂ resulting from anaerobic digestion or fermentation is considered carbon-neutral because it is part of the short-term carbon cycle, unlike fossil-derived CO ₂ , which mobilizes carbon that has been sequestered for millions of years.
