4. Processes designed with preparation in mind
To enable the separation of larger quantities of products, it was necessary to develop processes of a different design to those existing on the analytical scale. The idea was to carry out electrophoresis in a flowing liquid. In addition to increasing the quantities processed, these processes enable products to be recovered directly from the liquid phase, without the need for elution techniques. Several devices have been proposed, operating either in continuous or discontinuous mode, and sharing certain common features. They all feature refrigeration systems of varying degrees of sophistication.
