3. Methods for Analyzing Inorganic Nanoparticles
Despite the widespread use of nanoparticles (NPs) in many consumer products and their potential impact on human health, the identification, characterization, and quantification of NPs remain a challenge. To comply with regulations and better understand their hazards, organizations such as ANSES, the OECD, and CEN/AFNOR recommend characterizing the following physicochemical parameters for comprehensive identification of nanoparticles:
size and particle size distribution (polydispersity);
chemical composition (metal, oxide, etc.);
concentration (by number or mass);
shape (spherical, tubular, platelet-like, fibrous, etc.);
agglomeration/aggregation state;
specific surface area;
crystalline structure;
surface charge (zeta potential).
