Industrial contracts for equipment or installations involve a multitude of stakeholders. The scope of the project, which leads to a segmentation into work packages (derived from the WBS – work breakdown structure), will generate a multitude of interfaces to be mastered.

On the manufacturer's side, this starts with specialized design offices, each working on their own products.

Various engineering trades (mechanical, electrical and automation) will be involved.

All these stakeholders will find themselves involved in interfaces during the integration of the final installation. It is not uncommon to find discrepancies at these interfaces, which may require the sub-assemblies to be redesigned so that they fit together perfectly.
