Whether we're talking about the development of e-commerce, changes in the economic environment or the convergence of information processing and communications technologies brought about by the Internet, everything is driving companies to undertake flexible and continuous transformations of their business processes, their organizational structure and the technologies they use.

When markets change, when organizations change, when rules change, business processes must change. As a consequence of these transformations, information systems (IS) evolve. New functionalities appear.

As a result of the convergence of centralized systems dedicated to transaction processing and personal systems dedicated to individual productivity, a new class of information systems is emerging: workflow systems: the tools for "smooth" corporate change.
