1.1 Definitions of Innovation

The first “official” definition of innovation appeared in the OECD’s Oslo Manual in 2005 [AG 2 231] :

“• Product innovation is characterized by ‘the introduction to the market of a product (good or service) that is new or significantly modified in terms of its fundamental characteristics, technical specifications, embedded software, or any other tangible or intangible component incorporated into it.’”
