Between source coding and modulation (figure 1 ), formatting must create transport container-formats, most often called "frames", allowing :

• multiplex, assemble and encapsulate the components of a radio service (coded audio samples, audio coding information, ancillary data, still images and/or video, etc.) and, more often than not, of several radio services;

• transmit service information, also known as "signalling", to the receiver/decoder;
