. Since the first dual-core processor in 2001 (IBM's Power4), they have established themselves as the only solution for continuing to improve performance while maintaining energy dissipation compatible with conventional packaging and cooling techniques. In 2023, most general-purpose processors (PCs and servers) and mobile systems (smartphones) are multicore. Only very low-power or low-performance systems still use single-core processors.
